About 25% in women have uterine fibroids and are the leading cause of the removal of the uterus or hysterectomy in the United States. But having fibroids will not increase the risk of developing a cancerous fibroid and almost never develop into cancer.

The medical world is still unable to pinpoint the cause of uterine fibroids, but research shows that it is more common in overweight women, women that have never given birth, of African American heritage, having menstruation prior to age 10 and some women just have an inherited tendency towards developing fibroids.

Women can have fibroids even as early as age 20 and research shows that the hormone estrogen which is naturally produced in the body stimulates the development of fibroids. Uterine fibroids develop from the myometrium which is the smooth muscle wall of the uterus and these may grow as a single tumor or in clusters.

From a single abnormal cell that repeatedly reproduces will eventually create a firm, pale and rubbery mass that’s different from the neighboring tissue.

These may range in size, from the size of a grain to bulky masses that can enlarge and distort the uterus. Fibroids may grow as single or can be multiple in numbers and in extreme cases these may expand the uterus so much that the woman may be mistaken to be pregnant.   http://www.curefibroids.info
